Norse Mythology: Tuesday 12:00 PM EST

Instructor: Sabine: moonchild_auryn@yahoo.com
Class Size limit: 20

Materials Needed: Students will be required to do extensive online-research on the various topics on Norse Mythology I will assign, for class preparations, homeworks and exams.

I would also recommend reading the book 'Rhinegold' by Stephan Grundy; ISBN 0-55356-9457

Unfortunately, the book is out of print, but students probably can borrow it from their local library or try purchasing it for cheap at: http://www.half.com (the paperback edition)
This book is a modern approach to the Norse myths of the Rhinegold and the Nibelungen-saga, and is easier to follow than the original works of Norse Mythology.

Course Outline: In this class, we will venture into the mystical world of Norse Mythology and learn about it's gods and goddesses, (e.g. Wotan, Freya, Loki, Thor); their relations between each other and the human world; their adventures and the influence of Nordic Mythology on past, more recent, (e.g. the operas of Richard Wagner, 'Lord of the Rings' writer J.R.R. Tolkien' works), and present times. Special focus will be given on the myths of the 'Rhinegold' and the 'Nibelungen-saga,' and the connections between Norse mythology and the music/operas of Richard Wagner, (he e.g. composed the 'Ring Cycle,' after the myth of the 'Rhinegold/Nibelungen-saga')
